It was in 1910 that Thomas Henry Jewitt became pastor of Mount Tabor mission. The church grew steadily and in 1921 moved to Bickerdyke Street where it became known as Mount Tabor Pentecostal Church. In 1927 Pastor Jewitt invited the evangelist George Jeffreys to conduct a two week mission. This was a defining moment in the life of the church. The crowds attending the meetings were so big that many had to be turned away. The church grew so much from the campaign that they could no longer meet in Bickerdyke Street.
For the next four years from 1927 to 1931 they rented different buildings in the city centre including the Albert Hall in Cookridge Street, now 'The Carriageworks' theatre. During this time Pastor Jewitt and the leaders bought land on Bridge Street. The church building we are in today was built and officially opened in May 1931.
For some years now we have struggled with space as our Sunday gatherings and mid-week community work continues to grow. We have considered re-developing our current site. Architects drew up plans but the site was too small to achieve our goals. We have looked at other buildings in the city. We have discussed possibilities with the Leeds Development Agency. We have sought to purchase the buildings next door and around us. Nothing was working out until an opportunity came in 2003.
